The Memphis Chapter of the AMS/NWA is pleased to have awarded our first scholarship, which was used during the 2010-2011 academic year. The inaugural recipient of this award is Ms. Brittany Bell, a Sophomore majoring in Broadcast Meteorology at Mississippi State University in Starkville. Brittany is involved in the MSU AMS/NWA Student Chapter and serves on the Honors Community Service Committee, as well as the Residence Hall Association, and maintains a 4.0 GPA, ranking first in her class of nearly 2500 students. She is also a Project Assistant in the Department of Geosciences.
When Brittany is not on campus, she calls Cordova, TN home and is a graduate of Ridgeway High School in Memphis, having achieved a 3.90 GPA during her high school career. While in high school, Brittany competed in track and field and cross-country and was on the Ridgeway Student Council and a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club. She also participated in Bridge Builders and the Shelby Farms Youth Alliance. Brittany's true passion, however, is the weather and service to her community - a combination that will serve her well in her career as a Meteorologist. We congratulate Brittany Bell as the 2010-2011 AMS/NWA-Memphis Scholarship recipient!
Scholarship eligibility guidelines include that the applicant must reside in the area served by the Memphis Chapter (roughly a 100-mile radius around the city of Memphis), should be pursuing post-secondary education towards a degree in meteorology and/or atmospheric sciences in the 2011-2012 school year, and will be taking multiple classes towards that degree during that academic year. The application deadline for 2011-2012 has now passed. We will be offering a scholarship again for 2012-2013.
